While the fairy tale's origins in oral folk tales are ancient, the genre's development as literature began in the 16th and 17th centuries. The only necessary element is a magical or marvelous occurrence. While some, such as "Cinderella," certainly feature fairies, it is not necessary for fairies to appear in a fairy tale. Fairy tales, alternatively called wonder tales, derive their name from the mythological creature known as the fairy. The unifying factor in all the stories in this collection is that they are all versions of an old storytelling form: the fairy tale. "The Nightingale and the Rose" was first published in a collection called The Happy Prince and Other Tales (1888).
